Installing Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU) Keys

Windows 7 reached its end of support on January 14, 2020; however, organizations can still receive security updates through the Extended Security Updates program. This guide explains how to obtain and install ESU keys for Windows 7.

Requirements

  • Valid Windows 7 license
  • ESU add-on purchased from Microsoft or a certified reseller
  • Access to Windows Update

Installation Steps

  1. Purchase your ESU keys. This can be done through your Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).
  2. Obtain the necessary updates. Your system must be updated with the latest updates before installing the ESU keys. You can check for updates under Control Panel > Windows Update.
  3. Enter the ESU key. Use the following command to enter your ESU key:
    slmgr.vbs /ipk <Your-ESU-Key>

Replace <Your-ESU-Key> with the actual key you received.
  4. Activate the key. After entering the key, activate it using:
    slmgr.vbs /ato

  5. Verify your installation. Check that the ESU key is activated correctly using:
    slmgr.vbs /xpr

This will show whether your Extended Security Updates are currently active.

Important Notes

  • It is essential to maintain your Windows 7 environment with regular updates and security patches even after installation.
  • Keep track of the support dates if you're using ESU to plan for future migrations.
